Super Saturday

Sports fans around the world are gearing up for a big weekend, but not for that game in Detroit, featuring 400-pound overpaid athletes. The athletic excitement on the other side of the world is centered in Egypt, where the African Cup of Nations is underway. This weekend, the quarterfinal matches are being played.

And the Cameroon Lions will be there. After cruising through the first round with three wins in three tries, outscoring their opponents by a composite score of 7-1, the Lions have a huge Saturday appointment with the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

Yes, this is a huge match. If you remember, Cameroon defeated Cote d’Ivoire a few months ago in the World Cup tournament, but managed only a tie with Egypt in the final match. As a result, Cameroon missed the World Cup, while Cote d’Ivoire slipped into the big show for the first time in its history.

So put it on your calendar – 6 pm, Yaounde time. Cameroon vs. Cote d’Ivoire. The winner moves into the semifinal round, one step away from the coveted Africa Cup.

Cameroon has won this trophy four times, tying it for the most of any African country. One more Cup would put the Lions on the top of the entire continent. That would more than make up for missing the World Cup!
